During the Tribulation, Jesus said, lawlessness will abound and the love of many will grow cold. Those who give themselves over to this lawlessness will reject everything. Many will hold onto the name of Christian, but just like many church members today, they have a profession of faith but not a possession of faith. They talk a good talk, but they have never surrendered their lives to Jesus. In reality they are first rejecting Jesus. They are playing games with God. Remember, Jesus warned several times, “Not everyone who says Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven.” And Jesus tells us that not only will these individuals depart from the faith because they were not true believers, but also He says that they will turn against those they know are Christians in acts of spiritual treachery.
Look at Mark’s version of this in Mark 13:11-12. Not only will they reject Jesus, but also those who embrace this lawlessness will reject family. Jesus said, “But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.” Jesus is describing total apostasy. Total abandonment of the faith. And total loyalty to the one who deceives — the Antichrist. The delusion will be so great and the anger of the mobs will be so powerful that parents will turn in their children and children will turn in their parents to be tortured, imprisoned, and killed.
How can that be possible? It is the message of 1 Timothy 4 where Paul tells us that lost people will give themselves over to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. By not accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior — and understand how I said that — they have ultimately surrendered themselves to the power of evil and their consciences become calloused to the point that nothing affects them. Wickedness will abound, or a better translation of that is, “Lawlessness will be made complete.”
So they reject Jesus and family. It isn’t hard to imagine that they will ultimately reject morality. Listen to me, my friends. The world is headed for a time when evil will come to its climax. Even the watered-down morality of our day will no longer exist, and very few will acknowledge that there is such a thing as absolute right or absolute wrong. The concept of sin will disappear, and the cry for tolerance that we are hearing today will apply to every lifestyle except for Christianity. And on that day, when evil has reached its climax, love will be almost non-existent. Hatred will be the norm. No one will be safe.
